The Goods and the Bads: Trick or Treat!

Anushka

West Woods Elementary, Farmington CT

Every Halloween has to be a great one right? Well, the costumes are the hardest part of the holiday. Last year I became a witch for Halloween. No one guessed what I was. I also had a literal witch hat on my head but still nobody guessed. But let’s focus on the best part of Halloween… the trick-or-treating. We went to my cousin’s place for Halloween. They have a lot of neighborhoods around them.

“ Last year we got so much candy but it was Friday. Please let me trick or treat until 9:30 at least.” I begged my mom.

“ Maybe, we’ll see,” my mom added.

We pulled up to my cousin’s driveway, walked up, and rang the doorbell.

I looked around and could not see my cousins. I asked my aunt, “Where are they?”

“They are upstairs, changing into their costumes.”

“Okay,” I replied.

I raced upstairs and found them. My older cousin was helping her sister, (My younger cousin) put on her doctor's costume. My older cousin was already into her goddess costume. I helped my younger cousin with her doctor's costume and brought some candy for them.

“Ooh, Cookies & Cream Hershey’s,” my younger cousin exclaimed.  They took the candy with pleasure. My older cousin was going Trick-or-treating with her friend. The rest of my family stepped outside. “Let’s do your neighborhood first,” I said.

We walked to the first house and took a Reese's pumpkin, and my cousin took a Butterfinger.

By the third house, my fingers started feeling cold. They felt a bit numb. I looked at my mom with her hands in some warm gloves. I kind of wish I could have brought some gloves. My feet started to feel heavy. We approached a house that had a glass door. Through the glass door, I could see a small dog barking and trying to get out. It was a dog that had golden fur, with brown spots, and brown eyes. Now, this means as soon as we ring the doorbell, and somebody comes out, the dog comes out. And I'm afraid of dogs. I had butterflies in my stomach. My cousin rang the doorbell, and before I knew it, that’s what happened.

I ran back to my mom, who was in front of the house. My cousin was petting the dog, so she didn't even know where I was. She figured it out when she eventually came back.

We went to the next house and I saw a dog. I doubted that the dog might run out. We approached the house and they had a glass door. The man stepped out and saw that I was freaking out.

“ He’s a nice dog, he won't do anything,” the man claimed. He kept the small white dog, with brown spots, and green eyes behind his leg. I reached out for a Butterfinger and Kit Kat.

We continued trick or treating for another 2 hours. At the last house, there was another dog. This time, my older cousin was with me again. Her friend was with her. Oh no, you know what. I’m not going to embarrass myself. I’m going to pet the dog. The big dog ran towards me and I petted it. I PET THE DOG! I did it!

I realized that I should have not focused on my costume but focused on having fun with my family.

Instead of feeling bad about yourself, feel good about yourself. And, instead of sulking about it, I'm going to make the best of it, forget about it and move on.
