Success: Harrison's Story

Harrison

West Woods Elementary, Farmington CT

It was one of the summer days in 2022. I couldn’t wait to get into the pool and swim. I was walking into the home of the YMCA TigerSharks to take a tryout. When I was walking in I was thinking to myself.

I wonder how I will do and if I will make it,I thought to myself. I got out of the locker room and the coach greeted me at the pool. When I saw the pool it was bigger than I expected it to be. It was glistening like a diamond, waiting to be swam in. After I introduced myself I got into the pool. The coach asked me if I knew how to swim a freestyle or a backstroke.

I answered “Yes.” Then the coach asked me to swim 1 lap of freestyle and backstroke. When I finished I felt exhausted. After some time I finished the laps. After that the coach asked me if I knew how to swim butterfly or breaststroke or even heard of it.  I answered “No.” So then the coach talked to my mom. When I got out of the locker room and got into the car I asked her if I made it on the team she answered

“No but you’re going to come back in a couple of weeks to tryout again.” I was disappointed but I tried to look on the positive side that I would get another chance at it. When I came back I was confident that I was ready. When I got into the pool I swam the 2 laps the coach asked me to do last time. Then she talked to mom again. When I got out and got into the car I asked my mom if I had made it or not, she answered “Yes.” If I wasn’t already strapped in then I would be jumping up and down by now. Now I always think when I am about to give up, to keep going. I learned that I should never give up.
